SOLID WASTE COMMITTEE - Meeting Minutes for 9/8/25

Present: Juliet Caplinger (Chair), Catherine Curtis (Vice-Chair) Todd Beaulieu, Claire Ross, Milt Simon, Phyliss Brannon (alternate) Calvin Beaumier, Deborah Oliver = Town Representatives

Meeting called to order at 6:31 p.m. inside Eureka Community Center

Meeting Minutes from 7/14/25 were approved

Signing of Committee By-Laws tabled to next meeting

Reviewed letter of introduction emailed from “207 Waste, LLC” of Poland, ME which included request to be included in Town’s next bidding process for waste hauling services

Reviewed progress of previously discussed town-wide recycling strategies. This included:

- Textiles = Drop-off box now available; located by entrance to Fire Dept. parking lot

- Paint = Recycling information for residents now available on the Town’s website

- Mercuric Thermostats = still being researched

- Batteries = AA, AAA, C, D and 9-volt can be disposed of in household trash. Drop-off locations are being researched for lithium and rechargeable batteries

- Lights = Recycling information for residents to soon be available on the Town’s website

- Electronics = recycling available during Town’s Bulky Waste Day held at Public Works

- Food Waste = still being researched

Calvin and Deb presented chart they formulated to itemize Town’s future solid waste options. Starting with six strategies, three were immediately ruled out. The option specific to a Transfer Station facility was then weighted 1-5 (low to high importance) pertaining to ten criteria.

Committee’s next “Action Steps” were introduced, to include:

- Review pros & cons of maintaining status quo relationship with current trash vendor

- Request Town Manager contact half-dozen similar sized towns with operational Transfer Stations, to gain info regarding acreage involved, construction costs, and current costs to operate and maintain the facility

- Determine if Durham residents should be surveyed before or after this committee’s findings are presented to the Selectboard

Next Meeting: Monday, Oct. 13, 2025 at the Eureka Community Center starting at 6:30 p.m.
